At our first proper meeting of the year, 65 of us enjoyed the talk by John Negus on “Gardening with Flair”. Those of you who have been to one of John’s talks know you are in for a fun evening as audience participation is positively encouraged with Team A on the left of the hall versus Team B on the right.
There was also a fun quiz at the end of the evening, with some very nice prizes. The Chairman was straight armed into “helping” by deciding who managed to put their hand up first AND answer the all important question, before being allowed to claim the prize.
However, amongst all this fun and laughter we picked up one or two top tips. Did you know that the main component of WD40 is fish oil? I didn’t – and if you “mist” your hostas with WD40 from a height of 3 – 4 feet, it keeps the slugs/snails away? I had given up growing lilies – those red beetles ate mine every year. However if you grow the “Asiatic” varieties, these are not affected by the beetle, so I’m off to find some Asiatics and give them a try.
It would seem that everyone enjoyed the evening and we were only sad that so many of our “regulars” were unable to come along mainly due to bad backs, ankles, shingles, fell over etc. etc. We hope they are all making good recoveries and that we will see them next month when Lesley Chamberlain is coming along with advice on “Great Plants for Problem Places”. Think this will be a very popular topic as it would seem that my entire garden is a “problem place”.
