Crumbs! September is upon us already! Where is this year going? Wednesday sees our 9th meeting this year and our 8th speaker already! Paul Grimmer is going to be telling us all about pruning which is going to be pretty interesting, we imagine. This month, of course, we have two opportunities to meet as next Wednesday, (10th September), will be our ‘official’ birthday celebrations for our 40th birthday. By now everyone probably knows all about the event but, for anyone that doesn’t, details will be in this month’s newsletter and also announced at this week’s meeting. Fingers crossed for good weather, but the current forecast is OK with 20 degrees during the day and a minimum of 13 degrees overnight. It is early to predict the weather, but don’t forget you can always check it here!

Well, what do you know? This is far more to this pruning business than many of us thought! Paul gave a really interesting talk about the various methods of pruning, when to do it, how to do it and some of the pitfalls of getting it wrong. It was a thoroughly interesting talk and, judging by the queues to speak to Paul afterwards, a lot of people had questions about their specific pruning issues.

Paul Grimmer is a very knowledgeable plantsman who has his nursery on the A22 going south from Godstone Village – it is called “Plants ‘n Things”. If you get as far as the Mormon Temple roundabout, you have missed it! He became extra popular when he volunteered to sharpen all our shears/secateurs – “Don’t come all at once” – was the plea! The Club is going to consult him as regards the tree we have been given permission for on the Green, to celebrate our BIG 40.
