Well, we made it. Last night we met up for a few drinks and some nibbles to celebrate our 40th birthday as the Godstone Gardeners’ Club. Thanks to Chris who kindly allowed us to use his garden and to all those who contributed food for the event, it was a great evening! The ‘nibbles’ turned into a veritable gastronomic feast with canapés, pork pies, savoury profiteroles, spicy chicken wings, delicious proper Spanish tortilla, fabulous tomato and chorizo slice and much, much, more. We did our best to make a significant dent in the wine, (although there were some sensible people who stuck to the wonderful Elderflower cordial provided by Claire!), but still have a little left over that will go towards our Christmas drinks.
We all chatted, laughed and shared some interesting memories of the club over the years. It transpired that Sylvia, our current Chairman, is the longest standing member of the club, having been a member for some 37 years! (And she doesn’t look a day over 40!) We all shared in a beautifully decorated cake, (created by Paula), and raised a glass to the next 40 years! Below are some photos from the event, but we are sure there will be more to come! Thank you to Alex for writing the pre-report on our 40th Birthday celebrations on Wednesday night, As it happens, I DIDN’T do a “turn” and Jean’s legs were nowhere to be seen! A big thank you to Chris Christopher for letting us invade his garden – again – and to everyone who came along, bringing enough food to feed the entire village! Richard’s chicken wings were soon flying off the serving tray.
Paula Quincey had made us a 40th birthday cake and this was cut by Audrey and Percy Skinner, hindered by moi. It seems that we three are the longest serving members of the club. The cake was lovely Paula and the last few crumbs are safely in my fridge.
We drank a toast to the Club and wished it well for the next 40 years. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I have had lots of lovely messages congratulating the committee on a very successful evening. I had one email from a member, who does not live in the village, who said she was so glad she came as we are all such a friendly group – perhaps we should start up an occasional lunch club – just to be social. Members, what do you think?!
The birthday soiree went very well – the time 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm seemed to suit almost every one – so why not consider a supper club..?
Whatever the time, count me in…!
