Richard and Alex went to Wisley last weekend, (12th October), just to see how it looked at this time of year. Some of the borders were truly spectacular – as good as they’d be at the height of summer – and the whole gardens were lush green! Before they go on sale via the RHS website in November, members were being encouraged to collect seed from the poppies and wild flowers that were seeded as part of the World War I commemorations and a good half an hour was spent collecting seeds in a paper bag provided by Wisley.
It was quite a cold morning and the dew was quite heavy, but it was quiet and very pleasant in the sun. We discovered a new place to eat, (well new to us!), at the Honest Sausage where, as the name suggests, you can get a great sausage sandwich! For anyone who has also not discovered this, it is a relatively small conservatory at the top of hill near to the exhibition centre. Well worth a visit, but don’t tell anyone or we won’t be able to get in anymore!
We also popped along to the Millennium Glass House. This is a fascinating place to visit with the tropical plants, (and birds!), and the root exhibition is absolutely fascinating. Well worth a visit! At this time of year Wisley isn’t the first place that springs to mind for a visit, but it was very worthwhile indeed. Highly recommended!
