As part of our 40th birthday celebrations, Godstone Gardeners’ Club planted a beautiful cherry tree, (Prunus Shirofugen), on the verge opposite the village green. Whilst planted last November, the tree had its formal dedication on Monday, (11th May). Our club President, Brian Knight, dedicated the tree with his own, very clean, spade. Brian came along armed with spade and compost and, watched by club members, (almost 20% of the club’s members managed to come along), he dedicated the tree. It has a commemorative plaque, to inform passers by why the tree is there
Following the ceremony, the attendant group decamped to The Green Rooms Cafe for coffee and tea led by our club Chairman, Sylvia, where some club members were able to recall stories from the club’s early beginnings, whilst others had more recent memories to remember. Sitting on the corner of the green there was also much talk of the speed of traffic and the lack of any form of traffic calming but, despite being drowned out by the lorries thundering past at speeds well in excess of the 30mph limit, it was universally agreed that Godstone remains a great place to live!
The club is now looking forwards to its next 40 years and to the gardening challenges that lie ahead!
